Mutual Expert Welcomes new Strategic Advisor - Eric Root

 Mutual Expert is pleased to announce that Eric D. Root has joined our team as Strategic Advisor.   Eric comes to us with over 20 years in senior insurance company agency, field, and home office operational management (primarily with Erie Insurance) as well as Agent recruitment, sales and underwriting/product/technology oversight.

 

Eric grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania and completed high (boarding) school in Connecticut and college in Virginia.  Following stints as a College Agent for Northwestern Mutual Insurance and as an underwriter for Allstate Insurance, Eric joined Erie Insurance in 1993 as a District Sales Manager trainee.  Following completion of training Eric was assigned and relocated to Rochester, NY as one of two District Sales Managers sent to NY to establish the new territory.   In two years Eric was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager and opened the first ERIE branch in the state, first out of his home then through two subsequent moves into larger commercial space as the branch grew.   Within four years of operation, NY became recognized as one of the company’s new state success stories with over 70 Agent appointments, new premium growth of over $50 million, and loss ratios of under 60%. 

 

In 2000 opportunity struck and Eric was promoted to Regional Vice President and relocated to Richmond, VA overseeing all operations in eight branch offices in four states (MD, TN, VA, NC and the District of Columbia).  As senior field executive over this territory Eric was responsible for over 460 insurance agencies and 500 employees comprising over 800,000 policies and over $860 million in premium volume in all lines of business.  Eric oversaw nearly $200 million in premium growth during his two-year tenure there.

 

In 2003 Eric was again promoted, this time back to the home office in Erie, PA, as Senior Vice President and Division Officer over ERIE’s $2.6 Billion Personal Lines book of business.  Eric oversaw all initiatives in this capacity including employees, pricing, underwriting and technology involving ERIE’s auto and homeowner’s and miscellaneous books of business for over 5 years. 

 

In 2010 Eric moved to the Commercial side of business and was the top executive for ERIE’s $1.3 Billion Commercial book of business overseeing all aspects of operations including full P&L, technology, product development and strategic responsibility in these lines throughout ERIE’s 12 states.  Eric also served as Executive Sponsor of ERIE’s new $80 million commercial technology initiative to improve how Agents, Policyholders and Employees did business with the company.  It was in this role Eric helped make sure the efficiencies and ease-of-doing-business objectives were met while providing powerful information to the company and Agents in reporting and data execution.
